Seoul (ICN) Layover: What to Do in Transit, 24 or 48 Hours

At a glance — Incheon Airport runs free transit tours (3 to 5 hours) and has free showers in Terminal 1's international zone. With 24 to 48 hours to spare, the AREX Express reaches Seoul Station in 43 minutes, and the essentials (Gyeongbokgung, Bukchon, Myeongdong, Hongdae) fit comfortably into two days.

Before deciding: stay airside or leave the airport

It comes down to how long your layover is and whether you clear immigration.

  • Under 24 hours, staying airside (transit zone) — no arrival card, no K-ETA, and your checked bags continue to your final destination (confirm at the first airline's counter). You stay airside with access to lounges, showers, and food.
  • Over 24 hours, or leaving the terminal — you have to clear immigration. Travelers from the 67 countries on the K-ETA exemption list (including the US, UK, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and Ireland) are exempt until December 31, 2026. However, the e-Arrival Card has been mandatory since January 1, 2026 for anyone clearing Korean immigration without a K-ETA. You fill out the form online, free of charge, within 72 hours of arrival at e-arrivalcard.go.kr. Any site that asks for payment is a scam.
  • For nationalities outside the K-ETA exemption — the K-ETA is still required if you plan to leave the airport. Apply before boarding at k-eta.go.kr.

One practical note: even on a guided tour organized by the airport, you still clear immigration, so your e-Arrival Card needs to be ready before your flight.

Staying at the airport: showers, rest, mini cultural tour

Incheon (ICN) is consistently ranked among the world's best airports for long layovers. A few options worth knowing:

  • Free showers in Terminal 1, international zone, 4th floor, near Gates 23 (east side) and 28 (west side), open 24/7. Bring your own towel — no towel, shampoo, or soap is provided.
  • Terminal 2 has no equivalent free public showers, but paid showers are available (about ₩7,000 for a transit passenger with two boarding passes, around ₩15,000 otherwise), daytime only.
  • Spa on Air, a Korean sauna and rest area (jjimjilbang) in the basement of Terminal 1, exit 3 from the arrivals hall. Open 24/7. Expect roughly ₩10,000 for a basic shower, about ₩20,000 to ₩25,000 for a day pass, more for an overnight pass. A solid option for sleeping without paying for a hotel.
  • Free cultural experiences airside — hanbok try-ons, hangeul calligraphy workshops, art demonstrations. Schedules are posted on-site and at airport.kr.

The free Transit Tour run by the airport

Incheon Airport runs a series of transit tours, free or very low cost, reserved for connecting passengers. The setup is simple: a dedicated counter in the arrivals area, a bus, an English-speaking guide, and a return to the airport in good time.

A few itineraries offered in 2026:

  • Royal Heritage and Charm — Gyeongbokgung Palace and the Insadong district, roughly 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
  • Fun with the Seagulls — Gueup ferry terminal and Wolmi Park on the Incheon coast, roughly 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
  • Easy Outing in Incheon — local food and the harbor, roughly 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
  • Trendy Hub of Youth — the Hongdae student district, roughly 2 p.m. to 6 p.m.
  • Petit Shopping Delight — Sinpo international market, roughly 3 p.m. to 6 p.m.

Practical tips:

  • You can book online, but the airport holds more than 50% of the spots for same-day, in-person sign-up at the Transit Tour counter past immigration. A tour marked "full" online is often still available on the day.
  • Plan for an extra 2 to 3 hours on top of the stated tour length to cover arrival immigration, possibly dropping off carry-on bags, security on the way back, and boarding. With at least 8 hours of layover you have a comfortable buffer; under that, it's safer to stay airside.
  • Direct info at the Transfer counters: Terminal 1 +82-32-741-3139, Terminal 2 +82-32-741-0060.

24 to 48 hours in Seoul: a realistic plan

The most efficient way to reach the city is the AREX Express Train:

  • Terminal 1 to Seoul Station in 43 minutes, Terminal 2 to Seoul Station in about 51 minutes.
  • Official fare ₩13,000, online booking available (sometimes around ₩11,000 through resale platforms). Guaranteed seats, direct service.
  • The AREX All-Stop is cheaper (on the order of ₩5,000) but makes every stop, about 60 minutes.

Once in the city, two days is enough for a compact first taste. Here's a split that works well:

Day 1 — palaces and hanok

  • Morning: Gyeongbokgung Palace, changing of the guard, combined ticket option for the other palaces. Rent a hanbok nearby to get in free.
  • Midday: the lanes of Insadong (crafts, tea houses), then Bukchon Hanok Village for the traditional houses.
  • Afternoon: Gwangjang Market for street food (knife-cut noodles, steamed dumplings, bindaetteok).
  • Evening: a walk through Myeongdong, the cathedral, cosmetics shops, and food stalls.

Day 2 — contemporary Seoul

  • Morning: N Seoul Tower on Mount Namsan (cable car or walk up).
  • Midday: lunch around Ikseondong, hanok alleys repurposed into cafes.
  • Afternoon: Dongdaemun Design Plaza (Zaha Hadid architecture) or the National Museum, depending on your taste.
  • Evening: Hongdae for the student vibe, street performances, bars.

With only 24 hours, keep Gyeongbokgung + Bukchon + a meal at Gwangjang + Myeongdong in the evening. The rest can wait.

Tips / What to avoid

  • Bags: if your ticket is a single multi-segment PNR, your checked bags go straight to your final destination. With two separate tickets, plan to collect and re-check them, which eats into your time.
  • Weather: in winter (December to March) Seoul regularly drops below 23°F (−5°C). If you're connecting from tropical Asia, pack a warm layer in your carry-on or skip the city trip.
  • Avoid taxis to reach Seoul at rush hour: expect ₩60,000 to ₩90,000 and at least 1 hour 30 minutes. AREX almost always wins.
  • Don't wait until you land to fill out the e-Arrival Card: in-flight wifi is unreliable, and the immigration wait only stretches longer if you fill everything out on the spot.
